On Thursday we had a late night opening where Janis Rafailidou performed ‘Sunday Family Dinner’, part of her ongoing project project exploring cross cultural exchange across Leeds.

Visitors could purchase one of Janis’ ‘Family Dinner Placemats: My Parents Conspiracy Theory’ and enter a dialogue of her parents dinner table discussion as Janis serves some real Greek cuisine. Tasty wraps were enjoyed by all visitors.

*Artists’ multiples are defined as a work that has been conceived from the beginning to exist in quantity. They are usually three-dimensional objects that re-invent mass-produced items and manufacturing processes, and can cost significantly less than one-off sculptures or paintings. Multiples can be humorous, political or just plain beautiful, and are a great introduction to art collecting, as work by well-known ‘names’ can be picked up very reasonably. They also make intriguing alternative Christmas gifts.

Artsparkle is an artist-led organisation formed in Leeds in 2003 by Emma Bolland, Pippa Hale, Kerry Harker, Jon Wakeman and Karen Watson, with the aim of exploring the contemporary art market through the medium of artists’ multiples. Opportunities for artists to make new work are central to the project, which also aims to raise the profile of artist-led activity. Artsparkle organises a rolling programme of events, commissions and exhibitions, and collaborate with other multiples-focused organisations and groups in the UK, Europe and beyond.

Theartmarket is a hub of creative activity in Leeds City Centre based in the Merrion Market since December 2006 inviting a large community of artists, curators, press, and others involved in the art sector as well as an increasing footfall of audience members to a range of art activities including hands on workshops. They also have a very good relationship with other members of the Market.
